Not everyone is blessed with a bathroom big enough to host a hot tub party. However, there are ways to make your small bathroom look bigger without changing the way it works. Even better, all of these tips can be incorporated into your bathroom renovation plan when you work with Columbus Bath Design. Some of our tips can be used without upgrading your fixtures or reworking your tiles.
Tip 1: Larger mirrors double the visual size of the bathroom
Even the smallest powder room will benefit from a nice large mirror. The larger the mirror, the more dramatic the optical illusion. Your eye will see twice the area on the reflective surface.
Instead of choosing a medicine chest, opt for a mirror that covers the entire wall behind the vanity. More than one person can apply their makeup, and you enjoy the added benefit of such a spacious look. Even better, the mirrors never require painting – just wipe the dust away!
At the same time, there can be a lot of mirror in the sea. Avoid covering the wall from floor to ceiling with a mirror. Your guests may not like to see themselves while using the facilities.
Tip 2: Monochrome décor creates an open concept look
In any room, sharp contrast will always draw attention to bolder colors. Use a monochromatic design for your small bathroom and watch it suddenly look bigger! Avoid bold geometric tiles, dramatic colors, and sharp angles. The light gray and white of all your fixtures, floors and walls will help create the illusion of spaciousness. Choose towels and rugs that are darker than your primary color to add depth without crowding the room.
Also, reduce clutter on counters and shelves. Choose drawers that maintain clean lines while hiding all the little bits and bobs. Take out the hanging plant.
Tip 3: A glass shower door eliminates obstacles
In a typical three- or four-piece bathroom, a shower curtain or frosted shower door creates a visual wall. This makes the room look smaller.
Change it up with a transparent glass door, and now you’ll see the entire room at a glance. If you want to keep the frosted door for privacy, connect the overhead shower light to the light switch. Every time someone enters the bathroom, the light helps expand the sense of space.
For a really cool walk-in shower, use glass as one wall instead of tile. You’ll feel like dancing as glass connects the shower area to the rest of the spa suite.
Tip 4: Let the sunshine in with your windows
Expand the horizon in your bathroom with a window next to the bathtub or shower. Natural sunlight tricks your mind into thinking you’re in the great outdoors. With the curtains pulled back, you can see beyond the four walls of the bathroom giving that feeling of freedom.
You don’t need a full size window to take advantage of this illusion. Even the high window above the shower enclosure introduces healthy sunlight into the space.
Where no window is possible, use full spectrum light bulbs throughout your fixtures. The bright and warm wavelength is relaxing and energizing while lighting up every corner.
Tip 5: Floating vanity deceives the eyes
If you always hit the vanity, swapping it out for a pedestal sink is a quick way to restore traffic patterns in a small bathroom. But when you simply need an optical trick to make a room appear larger, look to a floating vanity.
Instead of a cabinet that extends all the way to the floor, the floating vanity mounts to the wall and leaves an open space underneath. Your tubes are hidden, you still have room to stash your blow-dryer, and many of these pieces include drawers for storage. Meanwhile, the room feels more spacious as the bulky furniture takes up less space.
Bonus tip: closed storage hides clutter
The over the toilet storage shelf is a masterpiece of space optimization. However, the bottles, baskets, and towels filling the shelves make the bathroom look even smaller. Choose a unit with small cabinet doors that hide all the clutter.
The bathroom visitor will only see the clean and flat planes of the cabinets instead of being distracted by the spa soap collection. Clutter in our mind is equivalent to “not enough room for everything”. When things are stored, we realize that the room is spacious.
