How Replacing a Tub Works

Keep reading for a rundown of the bathtub replacement process. this job maybe To get an advanced job. However, consider everything that goes into a sink replacement before beginning the process. Unfortunately, a lot can go wrong. Your best option is to hire a professional bathroom renovator.

Step 1: Remove the Existing Tub

You will need access to the water supply valve to start your project. This will require you to cut a hole (using a reciprocating saw) in the wall of the next room to expose the pipes. Of course, you will need to patch these holes and repaint the wall when the project is complete.

Once the water is shut off, you will need to remove the existing tub faucet, tub drains, and drain shoe. At a minimum, you’ll need a screwdriver and pipe wrench to complete this part of the project. You’ll also likely need a drain hole removal tool, which you can find at your local hardware store.

How to replace a bathtub

When removing the drain pipes (including the tub and overspray) from the old tub, you will need to remove the tub surround and drywall around the old bathtub so that the studs are exposed. This demolition project will give you an excuse to buy a pry bar. The process is dusty (to say the least). And, of course, you’ll need to plan for how you’ll replace the tub surround when the new tub is installed.

Once in the old bathtub, pull the tub from the side opposite the drain and lift it up. The process of removing the pelvis is a tedious and difficult task. Make sure not to break the drain pipes during the process. You will also have to know how to properly dispose of an old bathtub.

Step 2: Prepare the area for the new tub

Even if you purchase a new bathtub that is the same size as the old one, you will need to complete the preparatory work before installing the new tub. This may require another trip to your local hardware store for floor leveling compound.

Step Three: Install the new tub

You may only know if you have properly prepared your new tub space once you install the bathtub. Cross your fingers for luck and place the new tub, so the edges rest against the ledger boards. This process requires at least two people, as you will need to feed the drain pipe through the holes in the heavy sink without breaking it. Finally, install the drains and drain shoes in the new bathtub.

Bathtub installation

Make sure the sink is level before installing it on the wall. Also, make sure that the sink is in complete contact with the floor so that the ledger boards will not support the entire weight. Finally, screw or nail the sink flange slowly and carefully into the wall studs, so you don’t accidentally crack the sink.

Step 4: Complete the plumbing process

This step requires more than a container of plumber’s putty and a pair of channel lock pliers. Plumbing requires knowledge, skill, and patience. And if your bathtub isn’t properly connected, a slow leak can eventually damage the surrounding structure.

Once the new tub faucet is installed and the sink is connected, turn on the water and check for leaks.

Step 5: Finish the bathtub surround

Are you an expert in sheetrock? Let’s hope so. Because after you install the bathtub, you’ll need to replace the surrounding wall surface with new sheetrock (plus the hole you had to cut to get to the pipes).
