We’ll say it again and again: a room with five lights is much warmer and more inviting than a room with one big lamp.
We should be clear that while we adore all kinds of lamps—floor, wall, table, pendant, small, designer, oversized, or even chandeliers—we would never entrust one lamp with the responsibility of illuminating an entire space.
The practice we are referring to is still prevalent in many beauty salons throughout Spain, but it is dated both aesthetically and in practice, as it leads to undesirable dark and shaded areas, and often substandard lighting.
Look at this room. There is no single overhead light source, and night light depends entirely on ambient light, or lamps and candles that contribute to that ambient light.
The single pendant lamp is placed above the dining table because the kitchen, dining room and living room are all open to each other. It has a long cord to better direct the light to the table. It is really only necessary in this open area; Elsewhere, light is provided by candles, a floor lamp, a small lamp in a window, another in the last bedroom, and even an LED lamp hidden behind the kitchen equipment.
Imagine if there were one or two ceiling lights in the whole room, which were either tightly attached to the ceiling or had a short cable, which is also common in Spain. The lighting would be horrible, and we wouldn’t have enough light for all of our tasks. Sitting at night won’t feel comfortable either.
Try to have more sources of soft light in your home during these December days instead of great lighting to notice a transformation in the atmosphere. Accept it!
