Sustainability is all the rage these days and is starting to influence our shopping habits, especially when it comes to purchasing household items and things to spruce up our everyday spaces. And rightly so. As we become more aware of our roles and responsibilities to better care for each other and the environment, we are moving away from the “quick household items” culture. That’s why we love homegrown brand Wild Republic that shares our passion for ethically sourced, sustainable goods.
Grab a cup and let us introduce you to the team behind Wild Republic.
Say hello to Taryn
Taryn is the founder of Wild Republic! She lives with her husband, Morn, and two cats – Nacho and Sadie – in Cape Town. On top of that, Taryn is a self-proclaimed serious foodie, and has a voice to match. She loves to travel, try new restaurants, and eat out with friends and family. Her background is in law, having worked in the corporate world for over a decade. However, with an innate creative passion, Tarryn has launched a boldly designed homeware collection with the “beach meets jungle” theme.
After searching the internet for suppliers, I was frustrated at the idea of cheap imports from China and the like. “I decided I didn’t want to be part of the ‘quick housewares’ movement,” explains Tarin. Housewares is an industry that has boomed in recent years, since the pandemic creating greater investment in the home environment. As the industry grew, a new problem also occurred – quick housewares. “While there is a focus on the fast fashion industry and its impact on the environment and factory workers, the fast fashion housewares industry has flown under the radar. That’s why I decided to start Wild Republic – a platform to help conscious consumers discover ethical brands in the housewares industry.”
Artisan support
Wild Republic is a curated store that aims to support artisans with beautiful, sustainable homeware and gifts. The team seeks suppliers who produce quality products, set fair wages above profits, and make an environmental and/or social impact.
We hand-select every product to ensure it is boldly designed and ethically made while remaining affordable. In addition to the support of our wonderful suppliers, our store focuses on our love of nature. Nature is represented by our brand ambassador, Merv the Monkey. Merv thanks you for your efforts in leading a greener life And save him from a world without coconuts.”
What do you have on offer?
Well, at Wild Republic, you can choose amazing Turkish towels, bowls, and more. Let’s take a closer look…
Wild Republic – Turkish Towels
Wild Republic Turkish Towels are handwoven in Turkey, using 100% organic cotton, making them super soft and absorbent. These towels weigh only 300 grams and roll into a small ball, making them the perfect travel companion. Great as beach towels, bath towels, ponchos, wraps and scarves – the choice is yours. They dry quickly, which means you’ll never have to dry yourself with a wet towel again. On top of that, they come in seven adorable designs and Wild Republic plans to expand their range very soon to more designs as well as hand towels and blankets.
Wild Republic – Ships
Sourced from Eswatini, Wild Republic vases are made from paper pulp made from recycled magazines. Our resource, Quazi Design, was born out of a partnership between a local designer and magazine distributor to create much needed jobs in Eswatini. They focus on developing new and innovative technologies using only waste paper and want to change the concept of recycled materials. Here waste magazines and newspapers are turned into original designs using only their own hands and sunlight. Quazi Design is committed to the principles of fair trade and uplifting the artisans in their community. Their pulp bowls are simple but great as a decorative piece, either on their own or filled with dried flowers or fruit depending on the bowl.
